Photo Essays: Vintage Baseball
This gallery contains images taken during matches between baseball clubs in the Mid-Atlantic Vintage Baseball League which comprises teams from NY, NJ, PA, MD and DE. During the early development of our national pastime, the rules, terminology and equipment changed frequently until the 1880s when baseball as we know it today began to take shape. The teams in this league play mostly by the rules of 1864. There are many differences to modern baseball, most notably the lack of gloves, underhanded pitching, 3 balls to a walk, and outs which can be recorded on any batted ball caught on one bounce or in the air, foul or fair. All clubs in the league are recreations of actual teams from the time period.
